Navigating the Holidays: A Guide to Avoiding the 'Holiday 10'

Updated: Feb 6

Ah, the holidays – a time of joy, festivities, and, let's be honest, a smorgasbord of tempting treats that can make our waistlines a bit uneasy. While the infamous 'Holiday 10' might sound like an exaggeration, a few extra pounds can sneak in if we're not mindful. A hearty holiday meal can pack around 2,600 calories, and let's face it, who's counting when the table is laden with delights?

Here are some of my best tips to maintain your health and weight during the holiday season:

DO! Watch Your Portion Sizes

Portion control is key. It's not about deprivation; it's about savoring without overindulging. Load your plate sensibly, allowing room for a variety of dishes without turning it into a tower of temptation.

DON'T! Cover Your Plate Completely with Food

While the urge to sample everything is real, a mountainous plate can lead to unnecessary calorie intake. Start with modest portions, and remember, you can always go back for seconds if you're still hungry.

DO! Stop Eating When Physically Full

Listen to your body. When it signals that it's had enough, honor that. It's a simple act of self-care that goes a long way in avoiding post-feast regrets.

DON'T! Follow the “Clean Plate Syndrome”

Contrary to what we were told as kids, we don't have to finish everything on our plate. Leave room for satisfaction, not fullness. Your body will thank you.

DO! Focus on People and Family

The holidays are about connections, laughter, and shared moments. Shift the spotlight from the buffet to the people around you. Engage in conversations, play games, and relish the joy of togetherness.

DON'T! Hang Out Near the Food

While it might be tempting to station yourself near the appetizers, consider mingling away from the munchies. The farther you are, the less likely you are to graze mindlessly.

In the spirit of navigating the holiday season with grace and good choices, I invite you to watch an insightful interview where we delve deeper into these tips. Learn how small, intentional actions can make a significant impact on your holiday well-being.
